A major piecein the history of clockmaking

George Steele Tiffany (1872–1944) was one of thepioneers of electric clockmaking. His work onelectromagnetic clocks profoundly shaped the evolution of this technology.

This clock is a remarkable testamentto this era of innovation and embodies the most sought-after qualities:

authenticity;
original operation;
excellent condition;
rarity;
historical significance.

Identification

This example belongs to the firstgeneration of Tiffany clocks, manufactured around 1909.

Its identification is based on severaldistinctive features:

dial signed “GeorgeS. Tiffany Electric Clock”;
electromagnetic movement with two vertical coils;
compensating pendulum with two weights;
fully glazed case made of gilded brass.
The engraving “November 12, 1909” correspondsperfectly to the manufacturing period of this first series and constitutesa particularly interesting historical detail.

History

Following patents filed in 1901 and then 1904,George S. Tiffany developed a new generation of electric clocksusing a low-voltage power supply to maintain the balance wheel’s oscillation.
Electricity does not directly drive the hands; rather, itsimply replaces the mainspring with brief pulses that power theelectromagnets.

The first models produced between 1904 and1912 are the brand’s most prestigious:

large glass-fronted cases;
polished and/or gilded brass;
exposed movement;
very high-quality finish.

The model offered here belongs precisely to thisperiod.

Original condition

The movement has remained remarkablyauthentic:

original vintage coils;
matching screws;
original balance arm;
contacts present;
vintage insulators;
dial not repainted.

The only addition is a modern battery holder,which is fully reversible and does not affect the clock’s integrity.

This George S. Tiffany Electric Clock isa beautiful example of the first generation of Americanelectric timepieces.
Its excellent condition, original movement,perfect operation, engraving dated 1909, and complete overhaulmake it a first-rate collector’s item.Intended for a discerning collector or amuseum, it represents a rare opportunity to acquire one of themost prestigious American electric clocks from the early 20th century.
