Jean Didier Debut (1824–1893), Sculpture Of A Hurdy-gurdy Player, Bronze With A Beautiful Patina, 71 Cm
Artist: Jean Didier Debut (1824-1893)
An exceptional patinated bronze sculpture depicting a hurdy-gurdy player in motion.
This 71-cm-tall salon piece stands out for the high quality of its chiseling and its dynamic pose.
The musician is depicted in a festive pose, breaking into a dance step while wearing traditional costume.
His torn leggings add a picturesque and theatrical touch to the composition.
His hat, adorned with an elegant feather, crowns his lively expression.
The artist provides a faithful depiction of the hurdy-gurdy, a folk instrument emblematic of French and Hungarian music since the Renaissance.
The instrument is depicted with its characteristic details, from its rosin-coated wheel to its drone strings.
The piece is covered in a magnificent original chocolate-brown patina, perfectly preserved.
It shows only very slight localized signs of wear, attesting to its age.
The bronze stands on an original rotating base, a sought-after technical feature that allows for a variety of viewing angles.
An engraved signature plate on the front bears the inscriptions “Joueur de Vielle, par Debut” and “La Joueuse de vielle par Debut, Prix de Rome.”
Dated around 1900, this work is closely linked to the famous Debut dynasty of sculptors.
Jean Didier Debut (1824–1893), winner of the second Prix de Rome in 1851, distinguished himself through his academic works and genre figures.
His son, Marcel Debut (1865–1933), successfully carried on this artistic legacy.
Active during the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods, Marcel Debut contributed significantly to the popularity of these high-quality bronzes, sought after by collectors for their technical virtuosity and historical charm.
