Lead Ridge Finial Decorated With Lion Heads And Acanthus Leaves, Late 16th–early 17th Century

A rare and spectacular lead ridge finial with an architectural design, featuring a lion’s muzzle in high relief on each of its four sides, framed by a rich floral motif.The finial is composed of several sections: a molded quadrangular base, a decoration of foliage and lion’s muzzles, a projecting ledge, a floral band, and a crown formed by a large acanthus-leaf finial. The composition, designed to be appreciated from all four sides, reflects a decorative style characteristic of the late Renaissance and the early Louis XIII period.The presence of lion’s muzzles combined with foliage and acanthus is particularly noteworthy and bears similarities to ancient lead ridge finials from Normandy and Rouen.The piece is constructed from several lead elements, featuring prominent reliefs and signs of assembly and wear consistent with prolonged outdoor exposure.
