Mbete Statue, Gabon
A rare Mbete religious statue from Gabon. Made of light-colored natural wood, with cowrie shell eyes (very characteristic of this ethnic group), and a dynamic pose with bent legs—this is not a reliquary (which is very common on the market!) but a protective statue. I particularly like its somewhat rustic shape with its rough-hewn lines, and its beautiful, substantial patina of age on the honey-coloredwood.
A rare antique from the early 20th century, with a few small chips, signs of wear, and dents (see photo); height 57 cm and 62 cm with the base.
