This evocative view depicts a coastal scene featuring a bay and the ruins of an ancient building—likely a monastery or a church—with another structure in the background, complete with a garden surrounded by high walls right next to the shore.
The type of landscape, typical of southern Italy, and the intimate atmosphere of the scene suggest that the work was created by a landscape painter active in the 18th century, presumably in Italy during this period, with clear references to the Dutch school, and in particular to the works of Jacob de Heusch and, above all, Gaspar van Wittel, considered the forefather of Italian landscape painting.
Indeed, in the rendering of architectural details, in the purity with which the buildings are depicted, as well as in the atmosphere that envelops the entire landscape, one can discern a marked correspondence to the so-called “Vanvitellian realism”: one can indeed observe a comparison with a certain series of cityscapes that the Dutch artist dedicated specifically to Rome.
In the foreground, we also find the genre scenes that the artist loved to include in his refined cityscapes: fishermen, a pier with a moored boat, and two bathers drying off serve to humanize a view with an almost metaphysical atmosphere.
Our artist must certainly have been fascinated by Van Wittel’s works and sought in this painting to draw inspiration from his compositional style; by way of example, we can mention “The Tiber at Castel Sant’Angelo, Viewed from the South” by Van Wittel Gaspar (Rome, Istituto Bancario Italiano Collection), dated around 1715, for its rendering of light and the definition of the cluster of buildings, as well as the figures in the foreground intent on bathing.
The painting is framed in a lovely wooden frame.
The painting is in excellent condition and is sold complete with a certificate of authenticity in accordance with the law.
