A Baroque copper engraving by J. F. Fleischberger, representing the architectural and allegorical frontispiece to Johann Jacob Speidel’s Speculum juridico-politico-philologico-historicarum observationum et notabilium, published in Nuremberg in 1683 by Wolfgang Mauritius Endter.

The composition centres on an imposing architectural structure enriched with allegorical figures, sphinxes, eagles, flaming urns and scholarly attributes. Among the personifications are Philology and Justice, reflecting the intellectual, legal and political world of the publication.

Although the complex symbolic language of such scholarly frontispieces is not always immediately accessible to modern viewers, their graphic richness, disciplined composition and extraordinary decorative presence remain as compelling as ever.
