Pistols Signed Gillet-duché-desaga In Tulle - 1770

Pair of naval officer’s pistols known as “chien de mer,” Royal Manufactory of Tulle, circa 1770.

Signed “Gillet à Tulle” on the left and right lock plates, and marked “Duché” beneath the main springs. Barrels signed “Desaga,” a gunsmith in Tulle. The walnut grips are magnificently carved with long-maned sea dog heads—the emblem of the French navy—and bear the fleur-de-lis hallmark. The iron fittings feature a wraparound muzzle cap finely engraved with arabesques and a delicately executed front sight. Hook-shaped counter-plates and nail-head screws.
