Spanish Silver Sabre Of Honor Dated 1820 -
Spain, early XIXᵉ century
DESCRIPTION
Exceptional, richly ornate Spanish officer's saber, in chased and partially gilded silver, preserved with its original scabbard.
The frame features a curved hilt dressed with mother-of-pearl plates, set with decorative elements. The finely-worked hilt is adorned with neoclassical motifs (shells, palmettes, foliage) and centered on a figured medallion.
The richly decorated scabbard combines silver, leather and gilded appliques:
- relief decoration of rosettes and floral elements
- blue cabochons (turquoise or glass paste type)
- semis of stars inlaid on a leather background
- bouterolle decorated with stylized scales and vegetal motifs
The whole testifies to very high quality goldsmith's work.
Major feature
An inscription engraved on the scabbard's chape reads:
"1° de Enero de 1820"
This date corresponds to the outbreak of the Spanish liberal movement.
