Compact flintlock carriage pistol, 18th century. French work, circa 1750.
Carved wood, swan-neck flintlock mechanism.
Stock adorned with engraved brass scrollwork.
Short barrel, octagonal then round.
These pistols were used for protection against carriage attacks in the 18th century.
Their compact shape allowed them to be easily concealed in a pocket.
