Large Murano Mirror With Wisteria Motif In Applied Glass, Brass Frame, Signed, Circa 1980

Large rectangular mirror with a polished gilded brass frame, featuring a flat profile and mitered corners.
The mirror is adorned with an applied glass wisteria motif that extends across the entire right side of the composition, from the upper corner all the way down: a gnarled trunk and its branches, crafted from amber-colored glass outlined in black, from which emerge compound leaves made of sea-green glass with highlighted veins, and long, cascading clusters.
The clusters are composed of dozens of individual petals made of translucent, speckled parma-colored glass, applied one by one in overlapping layers to recreate the density and flowing movement of the wisteria flower. The relief is three-dimensional, and the piece catches the light differently depending on the angle.
The asymmetry of the composition—a large expanse of bare mirror on the left, the design concentrated on the right—gives the piece a very Japanese-inspired graphic elegance, in the decorative spirit of the 1970s and 1980s.
