L. BERNARDAUD & C° - LIMOGES - A 60-piece dinner service created for the reception of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth during her visit to France - April 1957. This refers to the official state banquet hosted by President René Coty at the Élysée Palace on April 8, 1957, in honour of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. : Since the Third Republic, the French government has commissioned the leading porcelain manufacturers in Limoges (including Bernardaud) to produce the official tableware for the presidency and high-level state visits. In preparation for Queen Elizabeth II’s official visit (her first major state visit to France since her coronation in 1953), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Élysée Palace commissioned Bernardaud to create an exceptional, exclusive dinner service capable of rivaling the luxury of British royal residences. Bernardaud drew inspiration from 18th-century Far Eastern motifs in fine gold (birds of paradise, flowering branches) on exquisitely delicate white porcelain to honor the sovereign.
