Carved Fluorite Lamp Base China, Circa 1900
This fluorite lamp base, China, late Qing dynasty features traditional Chinese relief carvings; an urn in the form of a stylized pedestal. During this period, Chinese craftsmen carved large quantities of decorative stone vases from fluorite, jade and rose quartz specifically for export to Western markets. While the raw ore was mined in provinces such as Zhejiang and Inner Mongolia, the rough stone was frequently transported to the main traditional jade and hardstone carving centers such as Yangzhou and Guangzhou. Master stone carvers in these cities applied traditional jade-carving techniques (using treadle lathes and abrasives) to shape the softer fluorite into intricate relief-carved pieces.
