LARGE POWDER FLASK KNOWN AS THE “RAM’S HORN” WITH ITS BOXES AND FASTENERS
Arabian Peninsula, Deccan, Ottoman Turkey, 19th century
Silver-plated iron, iron, leather, fabric.
H.: 24 cm – W.: 14 cm
Large powder flask made of silver-plated iron; it is shaped like a ram’s horn and ends in a conical spout. The body consists of three sections: two smooth ends and a stepped center; the spout is fitted with a loop ring set on a chiseled flower motif and a pivoting key; a cut-out frieze encircles the wider section.
The conical spout echoes the frieze in its decoration. The cap, held in place by a small chain, appears to be cast to feature a floral design.
This powder flask comes with the following accessories:
- A bullet box, made of leather and silver-plated iron, with a hinged lid and matching decoration.
- A flint pouch, made of silver-plated iron, leather, and fabric; with matching decoration and a loop for hanging.
- A belt loop featuring a zoomorphic figure and a belt buckle with a double bird’s head.
In very good condition.
These powder flasks were considered luxury items and symbols of prestige, worn by members of the royal family and elite warriors during military campaigns or royal hunts.
