Seascape – Mediterranean Port

A beautiful oil-on-canvas painting depicting a bustling Mediterranean harbor scene filled with numerous boats, fishermen, and figures. The composition offers a beautiful view of the pier, lined with houses featuring colorful facades, while tartanes and fishing boats occupy the foreground.

The work is characteristic of the style of Joseph Hurard, a painter from Avignon born in 1887 and who died in Martigues in 1956, particularly renowned for his views of Provence, Martigues, and its ports. A student of Pierre Grivolas and Jules Flour, Hurard was notably a member of the Groupe des Treize and developed a highly personal style of painting, recognizable by his lively, thick, and spontaneous brushwork as well as his luminous colors.

The signature “J. Hurard” is visible in the lower right corner.

The work is presented in a beautiful antique carved wooden frame, gilded and patinated, decorated with stylized foliage on a dark background, which complements the composition particularly well.
