Late 18th century – Early 19th century

Mythological scene featuring Eurydice and a pair of nymphs in a wooded landscape

Oil on canvas, 36 x 46 cm

With frame, 50 x 60 cm

These two elegant oil-on-canvas compositions were painted in the late 18th century and early 19th century. The expressive style is imbued with a new and deeply felt appreciation of nature, in which the landscape ceases to be a mere idealized backdrop and transforms into a living environment, steeped in lyricism and a subtle emotional tension. The raking light, the enveloping shadows of the woods, and the atmospheric rendering of the skies reflect that intimate dialogue between the human figure and the natural environment that constitutes the deepest hallmark of the painting of this transitional period. In this context, a particularly charming detail is the straw hat resting on the blue cloth in the first scene—a nostalgic allusion to the pastoral and gallant tradition of 18th-century Rococo, here gracefully evoked and reinterpreted through the lens of the new 19th-century sensibility.

The two scenes highlight two complementary variations on the mythological theme: in the first painting, the almost dramatic pose of the woman reclining on the red drape, contorted with pain beside her companion who rushes to her side with an anxious gaze, combined with the presence of the small snake slithering along the rocky bank in the lower right, suggests the episode of the tragic death of Eurydice, bitten by the asp. The companion piece, on the other hand, depicts a more serene and contemplative idyll, showing a group of nymphs reclining on soft white and blue drapery along a stream; the two figures are captured in a moment of intimate affection, immersed in the tranquility of untamed nature with floral garlands and intertwined foliage, striking a perfect balance between classical sensuality and a poetic evocation of a thoroughly Romantic nature.
