Carved and gilded wood, 51 x 47 x 43 cm
The front appears as a true architectural composition: in the center, within an arched niche, stands a cluster of grapes rendered with great plasticity, flanked by vine leaves. The vine motif, of classical origin and strong symbolic significance—evoking abundance, wisdom, and spirituality—fits perfectly into the 19th-century decorative repertoire of neoclassical and neo-baroque taste. On either side of the niche, rosette medallions complete the central composition. The cornice is dominated by an elegant plume of finely carved acanthus leaves that fan out, lending the whole piece a sense of height and monumentality. The base of the reading surface is embellished with a frieze of plant and floral motifs. On the back, the easel-style support mechanism with an adjustable crossbar reveals a solid and functional construction, resting on four legs, also gilded. The Mecca gilding—a technique involving the application of transparent gold-colored lacquer over a silver-plated or tin base—gives the work its characteristic amber warmth, now enhanced by the patina of time. A fine piece intended, in all likelihood, for a liturgical setting or a stately home.
