François Duquesnoy - Limestone Bust - 18th Century

Artist: Francois Duquesnoy (1597-1643)
Rare carved limestone putto bust – 17th century – after François Duquesnoy

A very beautiful and rare carved limestone putto bust from the 17th century, based on a model by François Duquesnoy (1597–1643), one of the great sculptors of the European Baroque.

The young putto is depicted with his face slightly tilted, wearing a particularly gentle expression. The full cheeks, the delicately rendered small mouth, and the idealized facial features are directly reminiscent of the childlike figures that brought Duquesnoy fame and exerted a considerable influence on 17th-century European sculpture.

The abundant, deeply carved hair flows in broad, wavy locks around the face. The interplay of volumes and recesses brings the stone to life and gives this small figure a particularly endearing presence.

The sculpture retains a very beautiful, deep, and natural antique patina. The surface of the stone bears the marks of time, with signs of wear and ancient erosion that attest to its age and give it a great deal of character today.

There is evidence of an historical restoration at the neck: the head was reattached to the torso, a procedure likely carried out in the 19th century and visible in the photographs. This historic restoration is now an integral part of the work’s history and attests to the care taken in its preservation over time.

With its 17th-century origin, the quality of its modeling, its beautiful antique patina, and its iconography directly inspired by François Duquesnoy’s famous putti, this bust is a superb example of European Baroque sculpture.

An antique sculpture full of charm and presence, suitable for both a collection of antique sculptures and a classic or contemporary interior.
