Lively Ideal Landscape – Attributed to / School of Paul BRIL (1554–1626)

A superb antique painting from the 17th century depicting a lively panoramic landscape in the purest tradition of Flemish/Northern Mannerism. The composition features a dense and detailed woodland scene populated by figures on a path, opening onto a vast river vista and a fortified city in the background.
​The work bears a signature in the lower right corner, complemented by an engraved nameplate reading “P. BRIL” on the frame. The reverse of the wooden panel also bears a red wax seal (likely a coat of arms or collector’s seal) as well as old inscriptions in ink.


​Attribution: Attributed to Paul BRIL (1554–1626)

​Paint Layer: Presence of gaps, flaking, and visible losses in places (mainly in the upper and central sections).
​Support: Visible horizontal cracks and fissures on the surface, characteristic of the joints between the wood panel’s staves.
​Surface: Yellowed period varnish and patina from age.
