Born in Bordeaux in 1869, Emile Brunet enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in Gustave Moreau’s studio in 1893 and became friends with Marquet, Matisse, and Rouault.
He returned to live in Bordeaux in 1896 and completed numerous public commissions in the Bordeaux region.
His easel paintings are imbued with both a highly personal form of Expressionism and Symbolism inspired by Odilon Redon and Gustave Moreau, whom he admired.
The paint is rich in texture, glazed as in this Expressionist-style painting, whose subject is treated with poetry and originality, giving it a character so distinctive—one unique to this somewhat unclassifiable artist.
