Reliquary of Saint Armel – Cardinal Logue’s seal – 19th century, Ploërmel, Morbihan, Brittany

A rare oval brass reliquary containing an authenticated relic of Saint Armel (Sanctus Armagillis Sacerdos), a remarkable testament to the devotion to this Breton saint. The oval-shaped reliquary is adorned with the papal coat of arms, framed by a decoration of transparent glass beads that give it a beautiful luster.

In the center is a bone fragment approximately 3 cm long, accompanied by its authentic certificate bearing the handwritten inscription “Sanctus Armagillis Sacerdos,” referring to Saint Armel, priest. A delicate paperolles cross harmoniously completes the presentation of the relic.

The reverse side is fitted with its original lid. The lid bears an intact red wax episcopal seal, which has never been broken, guaranteeing the reliquary’s integrity since it was sealed and attesting to the relic’s authenticity.

This seal belongs to Cardinal Michael Logue (1840–1924), Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland. Created a cardinal by Pope Leo XIII in 1893, he was one of the leading figures of the Irish Catholic Church in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His seal lends this reliquary a particularly interesting ecclesiastical provenance.

Saint Armel, also known as Armagil or Arzel, was a monk of Welsh origin who lived in the 6th century. After evangelizing Armoricaine Brittany, he founded a monastery that gave rise to the town of Ploërmel, in what is now the Morbihan department. Very popular in Brittany, he is invoked as the protector of the countryside and remains famous for the legend of the dragon he is said to have slain near Ploërmel. His cult has remained particularly vibrant in this region, where most of his relics are preserved, making the relics available on the market extremely rare items.

Dimensions: 5.6 × 8.1 cm.

The reliquary is in good condition; however, please note that one piece of glass beadwork is missing.

A precious testament to Breton piety and Catholic devotional practices, combining authenticity, prestigious provenance, and rarity.
