Set Of 2 Maffrash Panels. Caucasus. Circa 1900. 104 X 90 Cm
A superb set consisting of two large panels of antique Caucasian mafrash, joined and sewn together.
The composition is organized into two broad registers adorned with bold diamond-shaped medallions, set against a madder-red field punctuated by broken indigo-blue and turquoise lines.
The central medallions, rendered in ivory white and very dark brown, contain small lozenges surrounded by highly stylized floral, cruciform, and zoomorphic forms.
The various bands are enlivened by a succession of polychrome motifs that can be interpreted as birds seen in profile.
More likely, and in keeping with Caucasian narrative tradition, these zoomorphic motifs are associated with dragons.
These symbols were traditionally associated with protection and fertility.
A beautiful color palette composed of madder reds, indigo blues and turquoise, deep browns, natural ivory, saffron yellow, and orange.
The piece is woven very finely, wool over wool.
Plant-based dyes of great purity. The indigo blues are almost liquid, oceanic.
Circa 1900 or earlier.
In perfect condition
Dimensions: 104 x 90 cm
This design is extremely rare and highly sought after.
