Alsatian Reverse Glass Painting, Saint Elizabeth, 1820–1850, Alsace
An Alsatian reverse glass painting, from the first half of the 19th century, depicting Saint Elizabeth. Set against a black background, the saint is shown in a bust-lenght portrait within a yellow-ground medallion bordered by two bands, one green and one red. The medallion is surmounted by red and white flowers. Elizabeth wears a halo and a nun’s headdress. She is dressed in a red gown and holds a small crucifix in her hands. The saint’s name, “S. Elisabedah,” is inscribed beneath the medallion.
