Opaline Glass Pitcher

An opaline glass pitcher, made around the mid-18th century in southern Germany. Of the “birnkrug” or “pear-shaped” type, it is decorated with garlands of flowers surrounding a heart pierced by the nails of the Passion and surmounted by a crown. The belly bears the inscription “In der stillen einßamkeit bleibt mein hertz zu Gott bereit”, which can be translated as: “In the stillness of solitude my heart remains ready for God”. The pewter lid is original. It is adorned with a palmette thumb-operated lever.
