German Officer's Saber
A German officer’s sabre with a lion-head pommel, made around 1880–1904. The shagreen grip is encircled by a twisted cord and finished with a gilded bronze lion’s head, set with two ruby cabochons. The blade is acid-etched on both sides with decorative friezes centred on trophies of arms, intermingled with the profile of Emperor Wilhelm II. On the other side, we find the crowned German eagle holding olive branches with the motto: ‘MIT GOTT FÜR KAISER UND REICH’, ‘With God, for the Kaiser and for the Empire’. The nickel-plated scabbard was replaced by the German army with a black scabbard from 1904 onwards.
