Great 17th-century Italian Painting, Christ And The Adulteress

COD 01217

Antique Italian painting from the first half of the 17th century. Oil on canvas artwork depicting the famous Gospel story of Christ and the Adulteress, one of the most profound and humanly compelling themes in Christian tradition. The scene represents the culminating moment of the story: Christ, placed at the center of the composition, points to the (not visible) inscription on the ground, while the accusers and the woman attentively observe the gesture destined to change the course of events. The reference is to the famous words: "Let he who is without sin among you be the first to cast a stone," one of the most revolutionary statements in the history of Western thought.

The artist constructs the composition through expertly theatrical direction, arranging the figures along a diagonal that naturally guides the gaze toward Christ's gesture. The young woman, wrapped in precious draperies, has her wrists bound, but the accusers seem to suddenly pause before the moral force of the Savior's words. Stylistically, the painting displays a late Mannerist figurative culture attributable to Northern Italy in the early decades of the 17th century. The monumentality of the figures, the construction of the draperies, and the use of deep colors suggest a training linked to the great Venetian and Emilian traditions.

An artwork of considerable size, ideal for a reception room, a large hall, or a library. A painting capable not only of decorating, but also of recounting one of the most celebrated and profound chapters of the Christian tradition. The spectacular 20th-century frame in lacquered and gilded wood is beautifully decorated, with small losses of color in the lower section, easily restorable. The painting has already been restored with re-lining, replacement of the stretcher, and restoration of the color in several areas. Overall, the painting is in good condition with some signs of restoration. Internal dimensions: H 150 x W 213 cm.
