Coffee table made of mahogany veneer and solid mahogany, stamped on all sides with *C. Mauter and **JME; Louis XVI period, 18th century.The front opens to reveal three drawers; the first drawer reveals a gold-green patinated leather lining with small iron studs, an inkwell, and a silver-plated bronze hourglass—all original.(Conservation restoration of the leather) Solid mahogany legs forming the four tapered feet, adorned with molded rings and ending in gilded bronze feet. Original white Carrara marble top accented by an openwork gilded bronze molding.Locks in working order with their keys (locks previously replaced). Original gilt-bronze hardware with mercury gilding in very good condition (slight wear).
*Conrad Mauter (1742–1810) Cabinetmaker, master craftsman since September 10, 1777. Cabinetmaker to the Count of Artois, originally from Germany; his talents were particularly noted in tablemaking.
