A Gem Among Delft Tiles! Jonah And The Whale, 18th-century Biblical Series

Pair of tiles from the biblical series on Jonah, painted in shades of manganese (particularly beautiful here).
Left tile : Jonah is thrown overboard by sailors to calm the storm, while the sea monster waits with its mouth open.
The inscription reads “Jonah.1:15.” (“They took Jonah and threw him into the sea. And the seacalmed its fury.”).
Tile on right : Jonah is spat out safe and sound by the whale onto the shore after three days andthree nights.
Inscription reads “Jonas. 2. v. 10.” (“The Lord spoke to the fish, and the fish vomited Jonah on to dry land.”).
Second half of the18th century.
The inclusion of biblical verses was a tradition that became widespread in Holland during this period.
Corner motif: Thisis the so-called “carnation” (anjer) motif, typical of this era, which perfectly frames the double central circle.
Two pin holes present.
It is wonderful to have two consecutive tiles from this fabulous story, both painted by the same hand.
Excellent condition. Corners are sharp, no breakage, normal signs of wear, and a tiny chip int he lower right corner of the first tile.
