Engraved Iron Black Powder Test Tube, Louis XV Period,

on 18th century, powders were of varying quality and its power depending on their manufacture, and so a "powder test tube" like this one was used to test them.
Fitted in a blackened wood with sides, wrought iron test tube is an iron cylinder on end of a long rod, firmly bolted.
One toothed wheel on a pivot, nicely engraved and threaded, is held by a strong spring.
Reset to zero, it covers the furnace with a round lid.
The explosion of powder turns the wheel from 1 to 12, allowing quality of powder to be tested.
