Large Pastel Portrait Of A Lady Of High Standing, Signed By Louis Charles Arsène

An elegant three-quarter-length portrait depicting a young woman of the upper middle class, seated in front of a balustrade overlooking a vast mountainous landscape. The subject, with a serene expression and direct gaze, is dressed in a black silk gown in the style of the 1840s–1850s, accented by a remarkable collar and finely crafted white lace cuffs. A discreet earring and a carefully arranged hairstyle—parted down the middle and styled into large side buns—complete this elegant portrait.
Louis Charles Arsène, or Arsenne, was a painter born in Paris in 1780 and who died in 1855; he was a portrait painter as well as the author of a painting manual.

The frame is probably not the original one, but it dates from the time of the portrait. (Note: there are a few small chips on the frame, which do not affect the painting.)
