Late 18th-century Watercolor And Gouache, *crossing The River*.
This watercolor depicts a lively pastoral landscape, featuring a body of water lined with trees, shepherds leading their flocks, and architectural ruins in the background. The scene is balanced by alternating planes: figures and animals in the foreground, vegetation and water in the center, and hills and architecture in the background.
The work follows the tradition of classical and pastoral landscape painting, which was very popular in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.Period Louis XVI frame in carved wood with beading; some gilding is missing from the frame. Additionally, there is some deterioration and restoration visible in the upper right corner of the watercolor (see photo)
