Henry Charles Tenré (1864–1926) was a student of Jules Lefebvre (1836–1911) and Gustave Boulanger (1824–1888). He began exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1883.
The Louvre Museum, the Carnavalet Museum, and the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris hold works by him (sources: Bénézit Dictionary of Painters and Sculptors).
Our painting is a fine example of the most visually pleasing works that Henry Tenré’s talent can produce.
In this light-drenched composition, Tenré follows in the tradition of the masters of plein air painting from the 1870s and 1880s. The theme of the boat ride and the boater directly echoes the famous boating scenes by Auguste Renoir and Édouard Manet, while the stillness of the boats in the foreground and the subtle play of reflections from the vegetation evoke the peaceful atmosphere of the banks of the Seine immortalized by Gustave Caillebotte and Claude Monet.
