Late 19th Century Biccherna Panel By Icilio Federico Joni

Refined and unique "Biccherna Panel," thename given to the Cahmber of Siena City Hall, which features a thin temperapainting with a gold background on a wooden panel, and is framed by acontemporary, finely carved and gilded wooden frame. This work replicates thewell-known "Biccherna Panel," depicting the good governance of Siena,created by Ambrogio Lorenzetti around 1344. At the top center is an old man,symbol of the municipality of Siena, adorned with attributes of power such as ascepter and a shield with eagles. At his feet is the she-wolf, also a symbol ofpower, along with the young Sieno and Ascanio, sons of Remus and the mythicalfounders of Siena. The panel was used as the cover for the municipal accountingrecords, to which the coats of arms and the inscription below also refer,relating to the families of the Gabella executors, or those responsible for thetax revenues of the Republic of Siena. It is now preserved in the Siena StateArchives. This panel, the original of which is preserved in the Siena StateArchives, is a copy made by the well-known Sienese forger Icilio Federico Joni (1866-1946),renowned for his skill in counterfeiting old master paintings, and dates backto around the end of the 19th century.
