A beautiful pair of Bathiyari pouches from Persia.
Mixed-media wool-on-wool technique: weaving, Sumak, and knotted stitch. The use of these three techniques is specific to this type of object. The back is simply woven. The front and back panels are embroidered using the Sumak technique, revealing intricate motifs associated with protection. The bottom of each bag is knotted; these knots provide strength precisely where the bag is most fragile.
Dyes are exclusively plant-based.
