This antique rug, dating from the mid-20th century, originates from the Oltenia region of Romania. Entirely handwoven in wool, it features a floral design typical of the rural aesthetic of the Southern Carpathians.
Oltenian rugs, covoare oltenești, have a long-standing history tied to Romanian rural communities, where weaving was an art passed down through generations and rugs were often given as gifts for weddings or significant occasions.
The stylized floral motifs, often inspired by local flora, symbolize fertility (such as wheat), nature, and everyday life, telling a collective story through their colors and composition. Each piece is bearing a communal narrative.
It’s worth noting that one side of this rug was exposed to sunlight for an extended period, causing fading of the darker tones (see last photo where this change is visible).
