Devotional pendant; Our Lady of the Gate. Bronze, enamel, glass, etc. Spanish school, 17th and 18th centuries.
It has some flaws.
Devotional pendant or brotherhood insignia consisting of a frame with a ring at the top, a band decorated with enameled ovals (alternating black and white; this detail is not visible on the reverse), and a crest formed of rays alternating between wavy motifs, right-angled triangles, and right-angled triangles ending in stars; as well as two faces. The front features, protected by a sheet of clear glass, an image of the Immaculate Conception (identified by the inscription as Notre-Dame de la Porte; it appears to be a print or a hand-painted engraving). The reverse features an openwork plaque with a figurative design in black, white, and blue enamels (a monstrance containing the Blessed Sacrament, a cross inside, and rays of light radiating outward, flanked by two palm branches and other elements). Although there are several images dedicated to Our Lady of the Gate, this one is inspired by the painting venerated in the Chapel of Our Lady of the Gate at the Convent of Saint Anthony of Padua in Ávila, Spain, which was donated in 1719 by Brother Luis de San José. This devotional pendant (which sometimes served as a reliquary, allowing small objects to be kept between the openwork plate on the back and the image on the front) is considered by experts to be part of a series of medallions (oval, triangular, octagonal, etc.) produced in Spanish workshops (Salamanca, Toledo, overseas, etc.) primarily between 1620 and 1640, though they were part of a long-standing Spanish tradition. In general, their iconography reflects a strong influence from the teachings of the Council of Trent. ·
