Devotional pendant or guild badge. Bronze, enamel, etc. Spain, 17th century.

Devotional medallion consisting of a frame (featuring a ring at the top and decorated with plant motifs including fleurs-de-lis at the corners, a band of rectangles featuring ovals at the center of the sides and teardrop shapes at the inward-facing corners, on the front; only the crest is visible on the back) and two front panels. The front panel depicts what appears to be a painted engraving of a Pietà (perhaps Our Lady of Sorrows of Granada). The back panel has lost the openwork plate that this type of pendant usually features. Experts note a series of brotherhood plaques or medallions (oval, rectangular, octagonal, or triangular) produced in Spanish workshops between approximately 1620 and 1640, primarily in Toledo, Salamanca, Córdoba, Seville, etc., but also overseas. Their iconography is generally strongly influenced by the teachings of the Council of Trent. ·
