Reliquary Jewel Of Saint Vincent De Paul In Vermeil, 19th Century.

Reliquary of Saint Vincent de Paul in a magnificent repoussé gilt silver frame mounted as a pendant. The Saint's relic is kept in a leather case, gilt-ironed with bouquets of roses and the monogram SV (Saint Vincent). The vermeil frame highlighting the relic is decorated with lilies and roses, two flowers inseparable from the Virgin Mary; The reliquary features the initials VS and a bust profile of the Saint. Two cannetille palm fronds surround the relic, which is designated by an authentic inscription "St. Vincent de Paul." The relic is sealed on the reverse with a red wax seal bearing the image of Jesus Christ standing. The reliquary bears a small, poorly struck, and illegible hallmark, probably from the goldsmith, and has been tested with a touchstone. A magnificent reliquary, highly decorated with beautiful original gilt silver and its protective case. 10 x 8 cm for the pendant; 11.2 x 9.4 cm for the case; 36.9 grams for the reliquary. Very good condition. Signs of wear on the back. Material: Vermeil; Length: 10 cm; Height: 8 cm. Saint Vincent de Paul (1581-1660) was a French priest who dedicated his life to helping the poor and marginalized. He founded the Congregation of the Mission (the Lazarists) to train priests in Christian charity and also founded the Daughters of Charity to help the sick and the poor. He is venerated as the patron saint of charitable works. Saint Vincent de Paul, whose feast day is celebrated on September 27, was mentioned by Pope Francis in his homily at the Vélodrome stadium in Marseille on Saturday, September 23. The body of this great figure of charity lies in state for the devotion of the faithful in the Lazarist chapel on Rue de Sèvres in Paris. As your great saint, Vincent de Paul, affirms, “we must strive to soften our hearts and make them sensitive to the sufferings and miseries of our neighbor, and pray to God that He may give us the true spirit of mercy, which is the very spirit of God,” even to the point of recognizing that the poor are “our lords and masters.” It was with these words that Pope Francis, in his homily on Saturday, September 23rd, in the packed Vélodrome stadium in Marseille, commemorated Saint Vincent de Paul, a major figure of the 17th century... See the magnificent reliquary of Saint Vincent de Paul, on display at the chapel of the priests of the Lazarist Mission, 95 rue de Sèvres, 75007 Paris (France). Today, in the Vincentian Family, we celebrate the translation of the relics of Saint Vincent de Paul's body, which had remained hidden since the beginning of the French Revolution and subsequently underwent numerous changes of location. The relics were brought from Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris to the new church of the missionaries of the Congregation of the Mission, on Rue de Sèvres in Paris. This translation took place on April 25, 1830, under the auspices of Archbishop Jacinta Louis de Quelen. The gratitude for the love of the poor that God placed in the heart of Saint Vincent de Paul is universal. In this solemn procession, attended by a great many people, we counted the presence of royal authorities, various social entities, the episcopate, the city's religious communities, and a large number of those who were dear to our saint: the orphans and the poor. Shortly before the end of his earthly pilgrimage, our saint said to his children: "Soon the wretched body of this old sinner will be returned to the earth, it will be reduced to ashes, and you will trample it underfoot." But God's ways are different; he exalts the humble and simple of heart. This is why the remains of Saint Vincent de Paul were offered for veneration by the faithful of the Mother House Church of the Congregation of the Mission, where they are venerated by pilgrims from all over the world who come to his altar.
