Large Portrait of a Clergyman-Painter. Early 20th Century. Artist:Inscribed on the back: Ernest Faut
A remarkable large portrait of a clergyman-painter
from the early 20th century.
It is a large oil on canvas measuring, without the frame,
115 cm x 75.5 cm. It is presented in a
gilded and patinated wooden frame measuring 122 cm x 82.5 cm.
The canvas bears no signature but has numerous markings on the back
on the stretcher indicating, in Dutch, the name of a clergyman and the name
of the painter, Ernest Faut.
Ernest Faut was a Flemish-Belgian painter born in 1879 and died in 1961.
He was a draftsman, painter, and lithographer
of decorative works, interiors, psychological portraits,
religious scenes, churches, and beguinages.
Ernest Faut began his studies at the Brussels Academy under
Constant Montald and also studied at the Leuven Academy under
Constantin Meunier. He taught for forty years at the Academy of Leuven
, where he eventually became director.
Faut produced technically masterful paintings, featuring a delicate and sensitive
color palette. Faut also employed the chiaroscuro technique.
In the 1930s, his work consisted mainly of
symbolic scenes with a late-period influence of Art Nouveau.
Some paintings are characterized by a misty melancholy.
Faut’s work is scattered among several museums, including the Leuven Museum.
Some restoration work is needed: re-stretching the canvas, repairing a tear, and cleaning.
