Antique Engraving – The Adoration Of The Magi – After Rubens – 18th Century

An 18th-century copper engraving depicting *The Adoration of the Magi*, based on a composition by Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640).
This remarkable print depicts the episode from the Gospel according to Saint Matthew in which the three Wise Men come to pay homage to the infant Jesus by offering him their gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
The plate is signed “Rubens pinx. ” and features, in the lower margin, the Latin quotation from the Gospel of Saint Matthew regarding the Adoration of the Magi:
“Upon entering the house, they found the Child with Mary, His mother. Then they knelt down and worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him their gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.”
