Agnus Dei Reliquaries

A rare set of eight Agnus Dei encapsulated in metal "encolpion" style, covered with a protective glass pane. Each Agnus Dei is double-sided: the Lamb bearing the Pope’s date on the obverse, and on the reverse a religious scene that varies depending on the pontificate:
Leo XIII, Pius XI, Pius XII, Benedict XV.
Dated from the late 19th to the early 20th century.
Dimensions: Largest Agnus Dei capsule: 10 x 8.5 cm (without loop), Leo XIII. Brass communion presentation tray: 20 x 16 cm

Also known as “Martyrs’ Paste,” the Agnus Dei are traditionally made of white wax mixed with dust from the catacombs.
They have been solemnly blessed by the Pope since the 16th century. Their production and blessing ceased in 1964 under Paul VI, without being officially abolished by Rome, but pending a new papal decision.

A beautiful set imbued with devotion.
