Chinese Canton Famille Noire Painted Enamel Bowl, C.1885-1905

A beautifully decorated Chinese Canton enamel-on-copper bowl dating from the Guangxu period of the late Qing Dynasty, circa 1885–1905. The scalloped body is lavishly hand-painted in the distinctive Famille Noire palette with a continuous Millefleurs pattern of peonies, chrysanthemums and lilies, creating an exceptionally rich decorative surface.

The white enamel interior features the traditional Three Abundances (Sanduo) motif of a pomegranate, peach and Buddha's Hand citron, representing fertility, longevity and prosperity. The composition is completed by a finely painted red-and-gold geometric border.

Constructed from a hand-hammered copper body coated with multiple fired layers of vitreous enamel, this bowl displays the characteristic workmanship of late nineteenth-century Canton export workshops. The natural firing pits, light patina and gentle ageing are consistent with authentic hand-crafted enamels of the period. Well-preserved Canton painted enamels with richly executed Millefleurs decoration remain highly desirable among collectors of Chinese export works of art.
