Venice Under A Stormy Sky – Oil On Panel – Signed

Venice Under a Stormy Sky
Venetian School (?), late 19th – early 20th century
Oil on panel
32 x 20.5 cm — 40 x 29 cm with frame
Very good condition

A view of Venice captured in a truly dramatic moment: a stormy sky occupies nearly half the composition, with heavy clouds parting to reveal a beam of white and pink light, beautifully rendered in thick impasto. Beneath this shifting sky, the Venetian facades—bell tower, palaces, warehouses—stand out as a long line of roofs and light-colored stone, and the canal’s waters come alive with gondolas and silhouettes sketched with a lively stroke, enhanced by flashes of yellow and red that pop against the blue-gray of the overall scene.

The brushwork is loose and generous with paint, featuring beautiful impasto in the sky and the reflections—a style very much in the spirit of the Venetian vedute inherited from Guardi, where atmosphere takes precedence over detail.

The painting bears a barely legible signature in the lower left corner: one can make out a monogram of the “H. G.” type followed by numbers that could form a date—perhaps “1874,” though this is uncertain, as the last two digits are obscured by the paint.

Support
Fine-grained wooden panel, reddish in color, likely mahogany. The unlined reverse side shows a lovely patina of age, with a natural crack in the wood at a knot, which in no way impairs the viewing of the work.

Condition
The painting is in good overall condition; the paint layer is well preserved, with no repainting or restoration visible to the naked eye. The panel is sound, and the crack on the reverse has no impact on the painted surface.

Frame
The painting is presented in a beautiful frame made of wood and gilded stucco, decorated with a diamond-patterned latticework accented by rosettes, complemented by a smooth, flat molding on the rebate side — a style very characteristic of the second half of the 19th century, which complements the painting well. Some areas of gilding have been touched up; the condition is entirely consistent with its age.
