This piece of African art is an anthropomorphic Songye statue (originating from the Democratic Republic of Congo), carved in wood and richly adorned.
Morphological and aesthetic description
The headdress / the summit excrescence: The head is surmounted by a high headdress or an appendage sculpted in the shape of a horn or tapered crest, wrapped at its base by strips of fabric and fiber ties.
The face: The face has marked expressive features, characterized by an application of metal (copper/brass blades or plates) on the protruding parts (the forehead, nose and facial structure). The eyes and eyebrows are decorated with aligned metal upholstery nails.
Head and neck: The round and voluminous head rests on an elongated cylindrical neck, entirely surrounded by rows of alternating red and yellow seed beads.
The body: The torso, dark and weathered, has protruding breasts. The body is crossed diagonally by a necklace of similar beads from which a small metal bell hangs. The arms are folded geometrically on either side of the torso.
Adornments and attributes: The waist is surrounded by a loincloth of threadbare fabric and fibers tied with a red tie. The rear of the body shows details of securing the load or ties attached to the loincloth.
The base: The statue rests on precisely sculpted feet (the toes being visible) which are anchored on a circular wooden base split in the middle, itself fixed on a modern presentation base
