Description of the Fang-Ngoumba StatueThis anthropomorphic statue of African tribal art, associated with the traditions of the Fang or Ngoumba peoples (regions of Central Africa), is distinguished by its beautiful craftsmanship in dark, weathered wood, enhanced with metal elements (brass or copper) and upholstery nails.Morphological and Aesthetic AnalysisThe Head and Face:The skull is imposing, accentuated by a headdress adorned with a central row of domed brass nails. A metal band also runs vertically across the forehead. The bulging eyes are formed by large, ringed metal cabochons, giving the gaze a piercing intensity characteristic of reliquary figures (byeri). Triangular metal plates adorn the temples. The nose is straight and slender, surmounting a small, slightly parted mouth with curled lips. The Torso and Ornaments:The neck is long and cylindrical, entirely encased in a wide metal plate fitted and secured with nails. The square, robust shoulders bear a wide, horizontal metal pectoral plate. The arms are folded, with the hands joined in front of the chest in a hieratic pose of contemplation or offering. The Body and Posture:The torso is carved from dark wood with warm highlights, marked by visible incisions or tool marks.A thin metal belt adorned with a central nail accentuates the waist. The legs are bent in a sitting or crouching position, with the ankles also encircled by metal cuffs. At the back, a vertical extension (a mounting tab or stylized support) contributes to the statuette’s structural balance on its modern wooden base.Function and SymbolismThis type of piece traditionally served as a guardian of a reliquary. Placed atop cylindrical bark boxes containing the bones of revered ancestors, these figures were meant to protect the sacred relics from desecration while serving as a link between the living and the lineage’s protective spirits.
