WEAVING LOOM PULLEY BRACKET with HOOKED HEAD
Senufo culture, Ivory Coast
First quarter of the 20th century
Wood
H: 17; W: 8 cm

Single-piece wooden pulley, carved with a stylized bird's head with a curved crest and a small pair of ears. The bracket features incised sawtooth friezes and geometric decorative registers.

The hornbill is considered a true spiritual force and protector. Indeed, it acts as a messenger between the world of the living and the spirit world. It is thus a symbol of speech and the transmission of wisdom.

Bibliography:
Two similar examples are reproduced in Cyrille Morgoulis' book Poulies sénoufo du Mali, pp. 123 and 177. It is similar to type 1 from Fourou.
