Set Of 30 Eye Prostheses, Also Known As Glass Eyes—european Craftsmanship—circa 1900

Set of 30 EYE PROSTHESES, also known as GLASS EYES
European work
Circa 1900
Glass, resin and pigments
H: 2; W: 2.5 cm approx.

Each glass eye is unique and takes the form of a hemisphere or half-shell cut from milky-white glass or resin, centred on a painted iris and sometimes embellished with a few blood vessels to enhance the trompe-l’œil effect.

These ocular prostheses, made to measure by an ocularist for a specific patient, were fitted in place of the eyeball – the eye having been wholly or partially removed.
