Dogon Hunting Hare Mask From Mali
A superb mask intended for hunting dances; it symbolizes the hare with its two long, curved ears. Made of light-colored hardwood with a beautiful dark brown patina from use, it is clearly of great age—dating to the late 19th or very early 20th century. Height: 47 cm. Note the larger, lighter-colored hole that held a wooden bit; these masks were worn by biting down on the bit and were secured with straps made of fabric or rubber (such as inner tubes).
It comes from a magnificent collection assembled by expatriates living in Africa during the 1950s and 60s (and subsequently passed down).
These cultivated individuals took the time to carefully select their pieces on-site—a rarity—and the quality is exceptional; I have several others for sale. Please do not hesitate to contact me for information or to negotiate the price; it is part of my job, and I am happy to do so!
