Large 19th-century Burmese Antique Kalaga Embroidered Tiger With Silk Appliqué, Myanmar, Asian Art
Large Burmese textile panel (Kalaga) created in the late 19th or early 20th century. This work is made of polychrome silk, cotton, and felt appliqués, richly embroidered with sequins on a black background. The central panel depicts a majestic tiger moving through lush vegetation, surmounted by an embroidered inscription in Burmese script. The composition is framed by a wide frieze of stylized landscapes, alternating between rocks, trees, and hills in vibrant colors. Kalagas were intended for palaces, monasteries, and grand residences in Burma, where they served as ceremonial decorations. This piece, due to its size, the quality of its craftsmanship, and its remarkable decorative condition, is a beautiful example of traditional Burmese textile art
