Oil On Canvas, Filanzane, Madagascar, Tananarive, Genre Scene, Circa 1920–1930
Oil on canvas depicting a filanzane, or filanjana, the famous traditional sedan chair used in Madagascar until the early 20th century. This genre scene set in Tananarive illustrates a mode of transportation emblematic of the Malagasy Highlands, where travelers and dignitaries were carried by porters dressed in the traditional white lamba. Today, the filanzane is one of the most evocative symbols of the Big Island and features in Madagascar’s traditional iconography. Painted around 1920–1930, this work captures a scene from daily life with simplicity and authenticity. An old inscription reading “Tananarive” appears at the bottom of the composition. A work that is both decorative and ethnographic. Oil on canvas.
