18th-century Print After Jean-baptiste Greuze's "the Paternal Curse," Engraved By R. Gaillard
Large print after Jean-Baptiste Greuze, entitled "The Father's Curse," engraved by René Gaillard at the end of the 18th century after the famous painting exhibited at the Salon of 1777. A fine early impression on laid paper, featuring a high-quality intaglio print with the fine, close hatching characteristic of Gaillard's work. The well-inked impression has a still very precise grain, attesting to its early printing. The plate bears the original engraved inscriptions, including "Engraved by R. Gaillard," as well as the dedication to the Abbé de Veri and the formula "By his very humble and very obedient servant, Greuze." A large format typical of the large prints circulated at the end of the 18th century after Greuze's compositions. Good overall condition, with some wear and minor weaknesses along the edges consistent with the age of the paper. A fine early impression of this late 18th-century engraving.
